Central Engineering Department, Maryland Cup Corporation, in downtown Baltimore.
I began there in September 1978. My first "real" engineering venue.
I did not know what a cam follower was. But, having acquired my first drafting board, triangles, curves and compass set at age 10, I could indeed draw, and wanted to draw, and learn.
Learning. By day, upstairs on the drawing board, designing paper-cup forming machinery. Then downstairs, working with the artisans of Universal Machine Company, the shop that fabricated and assembled that machinery - machines that generations of draftsmen, designers, and engineers before me - and I - had first envisioned on vellum.
By night, at Johns Hopkins University. Years of study, of dynamics, calculus, materials, design. Learning the whole visceral, passionate, human business of transforming technical ideas into practical, producible forms.
Later, Army robot-vehicles, Titan rockets, and ceramic armor, at Martin Marietta Aerospace.
Balloon- and rocket-borne optical systems, designed for scientific investigations, at Research Support Instruments.
Gas sensor and battery design using electrically-conductive polymers, at Catalyst Research Corporation.
Consumer products - electronics packaging, plastic component and mold design, at Universal Security Instruments.
Navy submarine systems and structures, at Northrop Grumman.
Fuel cells, and electric generators for interplanetary space flight powered by radioactive heat sources, at Teledyne Energy.
I was fortunate to have recieved such a wide education - even as "globalization" and "downsizing" were entering the popular language.
Through layoffs and economic downturns, I stayed in. As others took early retirement or "second careers", I kept practicing my profession - by finding clients who needed the knowledge, skills and ability I posess.
I, and my associates at CES. They are equipped with specialized skills and education, available as needed to address your challenges.
